Medically Reviewed By: Dr. Ryan Clagett

Mature Male Model in Red ScarfEvery year, Dr. Clagett sees many patients in Kentucky who suffer from periodontal disease. While some of these patients take quick action at the first sign of pain, many of them wait too long to seek treatment and end up with advanced periodontal disease.

When you choose to see a periodontist like Dr. Clagett of Derby City Dental Specialists, he will thoroughly examine your mouth, diagnose your condition, and effectively treat your advanced periodontal disease using one or a combination of several different options.

As a board-certified periodontist, Dr. Clagett is highly trained and is required to effectively treat and cure any stage of periodontal disease. Keep reading as we talk more about this oral health condition and the treatment options available.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is an oral infection that affects the soft and hard tissues around the teeth. This not only includes the gums, but also the ligaments and bone. It is primarily caused by bacteria and plaque that has developed on the teeth and along the gumline. As we’ve indicated, there are different stages of periodontal disease, the earliest stage being gingivitis—a common condition that affects thousands of men and women in Kentucky. As periodontal disease progresses, periodontitis will occur. At its most advanced stage, this oral health condition can lead to gum recession, jawbone loss, or even tooth loss, and you could need gum surgery to regain your oral health.

Recommended Treatments for Advanced Periodontal Disease

  • Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing are the first course of action when treating advanced periodontal disease. During this non-surgical option, Dr. Clagett will use specialized tools to remove the bacteria from your teeth and gums. He will then smooth the root surfaces of your teeth to prevent further infection.
  • LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure)
If your periodontal disease is too advanced to be treated with non-surgical options, Dr. Clagett will use LANAP laser gum surgery. For this gum surgery, he will use a specialized laser to remove the bacteria from the surfaces of your teeth and beneath your gums. But don’t worry. This advanced form of gum surgery is designed to only target bacteria and diseased tissue, which means your healthy gums will remain unaffected.
  • Gum Grafting
Another treatment option for advanced periodontal disease is gum grafting. This gum surgery is used when Kentucky patients have gum recession caused by periodontal disease. During traditional gum grafting surgery, Dr. Clagett will place a graft in the area of your mouth where your gums are deficient. This gum surgery will encourage regrowth of the gums in that area and make them more resistant to periodontal disease in the future while protecting the jawbone from deteriorating.
  • The SAMRI Technique
Another less invasive option developed by Dr. Clagett is the SAMRI technique. This form of gum surgery is a gentler approach to treating gum recession caused by periodontal disease. It is a hybrid of several different, well-established approaches to gum surgery, and Dr. Clagett has been using it for many years. SAMRI helps limit post-operative issues such as swelling and can improve the healing process. Many of his Kentucky patients have greatly benefited from this technique.
